Positive and negative chart rules

Integers- A set of positive and negative whole numbers. They can be represented on a number line. THE NUMBER LINE NEGATIVE NUMBERS POSITIVE NUMBERS Absolute Value- The distance a number is from zero on the number line. An absolute value is never negative. Examples: l-5 l = 5 and l 5 l = 5 Whole numbers, decimals and fractions can all be positive or negative. A negative number is any number less than zero and a positive number is any number greater than zero. Zero is neither positive or negative. You can add, subtract, multiply and divide both positive and negative numbers by combining negatives, positives or a combination of the two.

John Zimmerman, http://www.algebratesthelper.com explains how to add, subtract, multiply and divide positive and negative numbers. Select data series as shown below. Here is how your chart supposed to look like at this stage: Here are the adjustments to do on the chart: Categories Options: Select Categories in Reverse Order. Categories Options: Select label position as Low. Delete horizontal axis and gridlines. Add labels for % Difference series. The last two examples showed us that taking away balloons (subtracting a positive) or adding weights (adding a negative) both make the basket go down. So these have the same result: (+6) − (+3) = (+3) (+6) + (−3) = (+3) In other words subtracting a positive is the same as adding a negative. Subtracting A Negative Number Numbers below zero are called negative numbers. Numbers above zero are called whole numbers. There are rules you can use if adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing positive and negative numbers. WORKING WITH INTEGERS: 1. Adding Rules: Positive + Positive = Positive: 5 + 4 = 9 Negative + Negative = Negative: (- 7) + (- 2) = - 9 The sum of a negative and a positive number: First subtract: The answer gets the sign of the larger number (- 7) + 4 = -3 6 + (-9) = - 3 (- 3) + 7 = 4 5 + ( -3) = 2 2. Multiplying and Dividing Positive and/or Negative Numbers. The rules that govern multiplication and division of numbers are very similar. The key is to identify if the signs of the given two numbers are the same, or different because this will determine the final sign of the answer. Rule 3: A negative number times a negative number, equals a positive number. Two negatives make a positive, so a negative number times a negative number makes a positive number. If you look at it on the number line, walking backwards while facing in the negative direction, you move in the positive direction.

Make it a fun and positive experience. The point of the chart is to emphasize positive behaviors, not the negative ones. You can make it a game with very young children. With older kids you can involve them in designing the chart or giving input regarding what behavior/chores the chart will include. Be consistent. Adding Positive and Negative Numbers.
