Us oil production and use
United States’s Oil Consumption data remains active status in CEIC and is reported by BP PLC. The data is categorized under World Trend Plus’s Association: Energy Sector – Table RB.BP.OIL: Oil: Consumption. We will now take a look at the current state of energy production and consumption in the US followed by a brief examination of the renewable and alternative energy sources. The following pie chart (Figure 4) shows the United States' energy consumption by source in 2017. As shown in the chart, petroleum that is mainly used for the purpose of transportation has the biggest share of 37%. Natural gas is in second place with 29% share of energy consumption. The United States has been producing oil and gas since the 1850's and 1820's respectively. In 2018, the U.S. produced 669 million metric tons of oil and 832 billion cubic meters of natural gas . Nearly all of the crude oil that is produced in or imported into the United States is refined into petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel fuel, heating oil, and jet fuel, which are then consumed. Liquids produced from natural gas processing are also consumed as petroleum products. The United States also produces and exports petroleum products, but EIA is unable to track how much of these petroleum exports are made from domestically produced or imported crude oil. Also, some of U.S. crude oil exports are refined into petroleum products in other countries, which may be exported back to, and consumed in, the United States. EIA’s preliminary data for 2019 indicates that total U.S. petroleum production averaged about 19.33 million barrels per day (mmb/d), which included US oil production has transformed itself fundamentally in the past decade. Between 1970 and 2008, US crude oil production fell by nearly half as conventional wells were depleted. Since 2008, however, production has rebounded from 5 million barrels per day to an average of 8.7 million barrels per day in 2014. The almost entirely unexpected increase – largely attributable to technological innovations such as advances in horizontal drilling, hydraulic fracturing, and seismic imaging – has U.S. oil and gas industry - Statistics & Facts. The United States has been producing oil and gas since the 1850's and 1820's respectively. In 2018, the U.S. produced 669 million metric tons of oil and 832 billion cubic meters of natural gas. As of 2018, it has the world's ninth-largest oil reserves and fifth-largest natural gas reserves.

U.S. crude production is expected to average more than 12 million bpd in 2019, according to the EIA, an increase of more than 3 million bpd in 2016. Shale production surged in the early part of the Saudi Arabia was producing 10.6 million barrels a day before it cut back production to steady the oil price by reducing new supply, and Russia has been drilling about 11 million barrels a day.
