Wine futures purchase

Buying Futures – also known as en primeur – means purchasing wine that is still maturing in the barrel and has not yet been bottled. The top chateaux in Bordeaux offer the majority of their wines (approximately 80–90%) for sale as Futures in the spring following the harvest. If you are a wholesaler, or wine distributor, you may purchase wine futures through individual producing vineyards. A wine future represents a purchase of a case of wine (12 750-milliliter bottles) Buying wine futures also allows you to purchase the wines in their original wooden case from the chateau (O.W.C. comes in 6 or 12 bottle cases depending on the estate). The best way to secure an original wooden case with your purchase is to buy your wine as a Future.

When you purchase wine futures, you are purchasing wine that is still in barrel. The wine has not yet been bottled by the winery. The most important collectible market for wine futures is in Bordeaux. To buy wine futures, you need to contact a negociant directly, or deal with an importer who has negociant contacts. This is the safest method to ensure that the wine futures you buy are authentic, however, finding an importer who works directly with collectors is rare. Most importers choose to sell bulk futures to retailers instead, which raises the cost of the futures and makes it harder to authenticate the wine. You can expect to pay as much as The wine is still in the barrel when you pay for it, and if something goes wrong during the aging or bottling process, you could lose your entire investment. In addition, the wine might not be worth as much as you expect. In 2011, Leoville Las Cases sold futures of its 2010 vintage for $300 per bottle, and today, Oregon Wine highlights several futures tastings each spring of regional specialties (think Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, and Rosé), where you can buy into futures at $50-$150 off what a case will cost when the wines are released. You’ll find similar events in California, Washington, and elsewhere. You can purchase wine futures from many of the top Chateaus in Bordeaux here. They typically ship three years after the vintage year. The number of futures you need to purchase varies based on the Chateau. In some cases, you can purchase a single wine future, while others require a purchase of at least 12.
